VMWARE ON AROS, could it be done??
« on: August 11, 2008, 01:00:57 PM »
Hi all

I want to ask the people with knowledge.
Before I go into the question I may say something of the implications.
In the storming Natami wither thread it was stated that the success of an OS is the number of quality programs that is available. I can agree on that.
I also personally believe that if you like an OS for whatever illogical reason it is, that also goes in to the equation.

I surfed the web and found this;
http://open-vm-tools.sourceforge.net/
If I understand AROS, there is first hardware, then linux and then on top of that AROS.
If this vmvare could be run in the linux compartment and then be accessed in a window in AROS  just like UAE, wouldn’t that be a tremendous boost of usability.
You could still use AROS but if you needed a windows program you could access it without leaving your favorite AMIGA OS. You just open a window with windows in it, and the whole windows world of programs is open. (most of them), you have to be careful what you write here))
I have tested many programs in different wmvares and you could easily run programs like 3dstudio max or wavelab  doing mastering with a string of heavy VST filters with equally good result. It just takes a little longer than if you run it natively in windows that’s all.
What you gain by this is that there is no rush in getting a large program library for AROS.  It could grow in its own pace. If there is something you need that is not developed yet you use the windows counterpart.  It would be like strapping hellfire missiles on AROS.
AROS would in an instant be more useful than all the small OS’s together.
I just felt that I had to throw this thought into the fire. I await sentence and immediate execution for doing it, but maybe, just maybe it could be possible, in this or some other way.
 Wouldn’t that be a nice addition to the other great things like the 64 bit and the multi core that’s in the pipe?  A capability to handle vm machines, perhaps not “in” AROS but “though” AROS, who cares.

PS. I think it’s only fair. Many programs and apps started their life on AMIGA. Let’s bring them back where they belong. DS

But in the linux compartment? It will not be AROS running it. It will just acces what comes out of it in a window.???

@Bloodline

Can't you see any way to do this, can't you see the world of difference it will make??

You can run AROS Hosted and VMware at the same time on linux if you like.

So it could possibly start like that. A version that you seemingly boot right into AROS like its the only OS but under the hood linux also runs a vmware that was accessed from within AROS some way.

 And when the virtual memory was fixed later on, it could go into the native AROS in an even more powerful way??

I looked at the QEMU and found that it was capable of running the following. x86, ARM, SPARC, Powerpc, MIPS, and m68k (Coldfire). So all those environments would be available, that would'nt be bad.

You can't have VMWARE on AROS until AROS will achieve full and stable Virtual Memory System...

Any virtual machine should run in a virtual sandbox created using virtual memory system...

Virtual memory on AROS is still at its beginning and there are just two experimental VM systems...
And why couldn't the writers of VMWare not implement a virtual memory system themselves in their program?

So, its a bit early but perhaps not an impossibility further ahead. It would be nice to have something like vmware or virtual pc as a swiss army knife in AROS ganing access to all major OS's.
