what if i like the boing/wrench/gfx card "mini" icons but not the blue filing cabinets?
solution suggestion: layered icons where filetypes (executables, folders) systemwide can be set to particular "master" icons which only need to have one instance of each in memory and then the icon's descriptor icon itself which is slapped on top. executable icons such as prefs programs that totally replace the standard executable icon will need a flag, unless major and minor icons can be stored side by side within an icon. that way if one doesnt exist the system uses a standard one
e.g. image files can be gifs/jpegs/bmp etc etc
major icon: (none: standard image type)
minor icon: "gif" "jpg" "bmp" descriptor
or
major icon: pre-rendered preview
minor icon: (none: let filetype decide)
a folder can have
major icon : (none: standard folder)
minor icon : (none)
or
major icon : (none: standard folder)
minor icon : small "picture" icon because its a folder that i intend to keep only pictures in
basically i'm seeking some compromise between windows, where all the folders look the same and one can change it in one place, and the miggy where everything can be different but it's a major pain to change every folder on the drive and an even bigger mega pain when one wants to change all the folders that have different detail to the normal folder!
