What happens if you enter
delete dirname all
in a shell window ?
If everything else fails and if the HDD (the entire HDD, not the partition) is smaller than 4GB, you can use
detache to remove the directory entry. Note that detache only removes the entry, it does not free the allocated space. You might have to wait for disk-validator to free the space.
