PS. If I install ontop of OS3.5 its ok,but that means 3.1>3.5>3.9

Why do you have 3.1 in this list ? The correct way is empty hdd -> 3.9 or empty hdd -> 3.5 -> 3.9 if you insist on upgrading.

Both 3.5 and 3.9 allow you to create a boot disk (a.k.a. emergency disk). Once you have created such, you can through away your 3.1 disks. In 3.9 it's even the first step of the installation and it says "do this first" (at least the german translation does). Why did you skip it ?

If you really don't want to boot from a 3.9 disk and insist on using your old and dated 3.1 disks, including a painful lot of disk changes during installation, you can install 3.9, reboot and install 3.9 again. Then the icons are ok.

If the OS3.9 installer does not manage to copy your CD-ROM drivers to the emergency disk, you can do it manually. That's no reason not to use the emergency disk.

Basically it's only the icons which goes wrong when installing from OS < 3.5. You only need the new icon.library being active, then it will work. For example you could do the OS 3.5 "pre" installation and then install OS 3.9 full. Or as I said above, just install OS 3.9, reboot and install again.

The emergency disk will just save you a lot of disk changes and manual installation once you have it working. The emergency disk makes the OS 3.1 disks obsolete.
