I tried to install NewIcons on my hard drive running OS3.9

Big mistake. OS3.9 is already compatible to NewIcons. Installing NewIcons on top of it ruins it.

it seems to have killed my system

Exactly.

I need some help

Well, a complete new installation of OS3.9 from scratch would be best IMHO.

However, from memory, in order to uninstall NewIcons, you probably have to do these steps:

- edit s:user-startup. Remove NewIcons and DefIcons.
- delete c:NewIcons and c:DefIcons
- delete libs:newicon.library
- delete prefs/newiconsprefs
- replace prefs/deficonsprefs by the version on your OS3.9 CD
- make sure that all files in Libs and Classes have version numbers equal to or higher than those on your OS3.9 CD.
- ...

Well, I just tried to install NewIcons on my favourite OS3.9 WinUAE config and guess what... nothing happened. It just worked. Nothing of what you described happened. The only impact is that none of the icons were installed correctly. But it does boot without any error message and all programs work correctly.

When I try to run something, say from Prefs, it gives me a needs Resource.library V.44, but the Library is in the Libs folder, running. When I try to run an OS app like Fomat Disk, either from the Workbench menu or from the Tools folder nothing happens....

Are you sure it is NewIcons which caused this ? Isn't it rather that you installed ClassAct which caused these errors ? The successor of ClassAct, ReAction, is part of OS3.9. Installing ClassAct means a downgrade and all programs using ReAction will fail afterwards with error messages similar to yours.

In order to remove ClassAct from OS3.9, you have to copy all the ReAction classes from your OS3.9 CD into the Classes directory. Then you have to reinstall Boingbag1 and Boingbag2 in order to update to the current versions. Also remove CAPrefs from user-startup and delete it from C.

Thomas

Just everything in the Classes directory, except datatypes.
