I doubt you're wasting your time.
Have you checked the termination?
Try the CD drive, or the Zip drive alone without the HDD, tell us what happens.

I don't get your logic "DoomMaster", you think that a slow drive with slow SCSI card is somehow better than a decent speed CD drive with a decent speed SCSI controler.

Trust me. I have an old GVP SCSI controler that is about 13 or 14 years old, it still works fine, and should work with some pretty fast CD drives out there.
I don't see anything wrong with our modern(ish) hardware.
