When you mention 'changing modes', do you mean screen relolution/ color depth?

Are you sure that it's not one of those startup screen color errors? (flashing red/blue)

In fact, now that I think of it, I'm in desperate need of an A3000UX! You're solution might be as simple as handing that computer over to me!
