Standard audio CD? You'd need to hook speakers up to the audio output of the CD drive.

(Quite often people refer to audio CDs they've burned from MP3s as "MP3 CDs" when they are no longer MP3s, but plain old audio format.  If this isn't the case, I apologize for the assumption.)

I've never had to install anything additional for OS3.9 to play MP3 files.

If they're definitely MP3 files (and not CD audio tracks,) I can't say I've seen that problem even with a clean install of OS3.9.

Can the MP3 files be browsed to in Workbench and maybe one copied over to the HD for a test?

'030 might need a bit of tweaking in general to get them to play smoothly (lowering quality settings and picking mono mode in AmigaAMP,) but even so they should be making some kind of noise from the start.
