This could be the next Amiga if AOS 4 ran on x64.

Zero Footprint PC

I know it would be a major project to port AOS4 from it's PPC/68K roots over to x86. I also know that a lot of Amiga fans are still RISC lovers. But wow, it would be so cool if I could just buy new standard PC hardware and run AOS. Then start writing applications for it.

It would be even cooler if someone then added an emulation layer for the AGA/ECS/OCS chipsets so that the new OS could still run older applications that required them. Perhaps, using winUAE code.  :-D

Sorry just dreaming a little bit about being able to natively boot AmigaOS on readily available hardware from multiple vendors.

1GB DDR2 RAM sticks are going for $18USD so buy it with the 1GB it comes with an toss in another 1GB stick for 2GB of ram.

It's not just that model that I'm talking about in my post though. Just the idea that if AOS was ported to run on x86 then we could pick and choose our hardware. :-P

Perhaps, something like this Shuttle XPC is more to your aesthetic liking.



    I personally like the small zero footprint form factor full keyboard as opposed to a laptop layout. It even has a mini PCI and PCIe slot, takes a 3.5" drive which makes it a lot more expandable than a laptop. It'd look real nice next to my Shuttle running AmigaOS or I guess I could just dual boot AmigaOS and Windoze.

I think AROS is pretty much on it's way to do just that. Shame that the userbase is still small, it's a hell of an OS if you ask me (which reminds me I still need to donate something for one or more bounties...)

I'd be interested in a mature AROS. Especially, if it starts to advance beyond AOS 4.0. I'd be happy with a AmigaOS like operating system running on x86 hardware and not in an emulation system. I'd want it to boot native.

I can't even imagine how fast OS 3.9 would be if it was ported native to an AMD 64 X2 processor.
