Installing Amiga OS 3.5 - without pre-install of OS 3.1
« on: January 11, 2008, 05:48:08 PM »
Is there any way to install OS 3.5 on my A4000D without having to have 3.1 installed with a CDFS of some sort in it? I see that the manual describes the process to create a "rescue" floppy that will allow you to install OS 3.5 just by booting off the rescue floppy.

Why in the world didn't they include a rescue floppy by default - can anyone just create me one? :-? It's not the full OS and requires that I have the CDROM of OS 3.5 so it's not like I'm asking someone to pirate me anything. (At least the way I understand it. Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Anyone willing to help - I'll pay shipping and for the DD disk.

The emergency disk cannot be included, because it has to be customised for your special hardware. Everytime you change your hardware configuration you have to create a new emergency disk.

Regarding your problem, if your Amiga has a CD-ROM drive, you also have drivers for it. It does not make any sense to connect a CD-ROM drive to your Amiga without having drivers for it.

You can use the demo version of IDEfix97 from Aminet to mount the CD drive until OS3.5 has been installed.

Bye,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

Ok, well my A4000 doesn't have Internet access. I don't have AmigaOS 3.1 disks for it and while I have about 20 CDROM drives, I don't have a CDFS for them. My ASIM CDFS disk went bad. So, somehow, I've got to get AmigaOS 3.1 onto the drive and IDEfix97 onto it

Since AmigaOS 3.5 includes all of AmigaOS 3.1 on the disk - I do own 3.1 but I don't have it on Amiga formatted floppy.

I guess I'm stuck buying AmigaOS 3.1 for another $30? Wow. I'll figure this out somehow.

I'm guessing that his problem is that he doesn't have the WB3.1 disks to begin with, thus being unable to access the CD from the Amiga?

Last time I had a similar problem I was lucky enough to have some old coverdisk with NComm, so I could transfer what I needed over the serial port.

Thanks Caius,

You hit the nail on the head.

I guess, I'll have to use my A1200 to install OS 3.0 onto a hard drive and move it over to my A4000 while it still have the 3.0 roms. Then buy a copy of some CDFS on floppy from somwhere so that I can get access to a CDROM to copy OS 3.1 onto the drive.

Then put in the new roms, boot OS 3.1 and finally install AmigaOS 3.5 from the CDROM.

I love Amiga but wow have I been off the scene too long.

If you have a HD in your Amiga that you can connect to a PC you can use it in UAE and install the OS that way. You can also download the cd drivers and a cd filesystem and put that on your hd that way.

That's a neat idea - so I can get UAE up and use it to partition, format and install WB 3.1 onto a blank hard drive and then move that over to my Amiga 4000 and have it recognize and boot from it.

That's a good option.

Update: Ok, color me silly - I found in the bottom of an old Commodore box of mine the original AmigaDos 3.1 install disks. So I think I can get 3.1 up and running easy enough, they should work.

The A4000 I bought has a Buddha controller in it but no install floppies. Otherwise, I'd be all set at this point. I can download the drivers but not easily get them onto Amiga formatted floppy.

Thanks everyone for the ideas and help. I guess I'm down to just finding a CDFS on Amiga floppy.

I'd pay someone for the disk and shipping if they'd just copy the demo IDE-fix onto it for me. That'd get my cd working long enough to install 3.5 and then I'm golden.

I'll see if I can get the ADF file onto my A1200 using the IBM floppy to Amiga then back to Amiga DD proggy I found. Thanks, I now have two options. 8^)

if you don't have a set of workbench disks, this could be one solution.

If you have WB3.0 disk set, you can use these to install a workbench on your A4k. You can use crossdos (pc0:) to access pc formated disk to tranfer a cdrom file system. After installing set device to scsi.device unit 1 for slave cdrom. Now your cdrom should work!

should even work with wb2x quite similar

I can't believe I forgot about Crossdos being bundled with the OS. Boy, I've been away for too long. :-D

Thanks EVERYONE for getting me going again. Sorry to have asked such a simple question. Now that I'm working on the A4000, everything is starting to come back.

I'm using Crossdos right now to transfer the drivers for the Budha which includes CDFS. I'm waiting on my 3.1 ROMS to be delivered so once those are in, I'm ready to install OS 35.

I really appreciate the help. That is my fondest memory of the Amiga community. How willing people were to help another Amiga user out. On the Linux forums I use, I'd have just been labeled a noob and told the read the manual. (If it was that polite.)

Thanks again. :-) -Nyle
