Yea,

Most of us here cant even run OS4! I think OS5 might be jumping the gun a little bit?

.........

You guys have little to no user base at this point! You will never make money on this IP. Will you please open source it and give up!

I don't know if the rumors of an announcement at a closed press event at CES are true or not but "New hardware is indeed being developed, and we have selected the first 3rd party manufacturer that will build in high quantities, and yes, this new hardware is being delayed because OS 4.0 is needed to complete the package and to resolve certain technical issues.  As I said before, no one wants OS 4.0 shipping more than Amiga."

I too can't run OS 4. I won't spend $900 for a used PPC accelerator but I can justify spending $900 on a new machine with OS or slightly more with monitor. I hope they do announce something. I love the look of OS 4 but 68K Amigas can't run it and PPC Amigas are hard to come by.

We only have to wait until Jan 7th or 8th to find out for sure.

One of the things I'm trying to do at my job is do away with the MS WIndows servers and replace them with a combination of X Serve and Suse machines.  Dos prompt is so limited when compared to Terminal on a Mac or Linux box and it so hard to tweak it.

SuSe OES2 is an amazing server OS. Easy to manage and Novell's support of SuSe gets better every day. I'd say by the time SuSe OES3 comes out Novell will have blended the best of their products fully into the best that Linux has to offer. Definitely a good pick for server OS.

As for Mac, I won't be a troll.

Back on topic - AmigaOS 5 is AmigaAnywhere 2

Reghardware on AmigaOS 5

So it will apparently run Workbench and all apps in a layer over top of another OS. So is custom chipset emulation possible as well? If so it could be interesting to run it on new hardware. I'd hope that they'd work with VMWare to be able to run it without another host OS though I guess we could run it over a little Linux Kernal.

What Workbench?  This is a whole new OS, no compat with the classic is involved.

Well I haven't used AmigaAnywhere myself but "The point for AmigaOS buffs is that AmigaAnywhere 2 effectively starts up a virtual machine, boots AmigaOS and runs the code on top of that. And that makes it perfectly possible for Amiga lovers to fire it up and run the familiar Amiga GUI instead of the game." According to the article this is the AmigaOS kernel running over a host OS and Workbench could be run on top of it.

If this is the case, then I'm a little confused why none of us seem to be Interested in new RISC hardware running AmigaAnywhere with an enhanced AmigaOS GUI. I guess my only concern is custom chipset emulation so I can run most of my old software while I wait for new. We all know there needs to be a clean break at some point - Dave Haynie even wanted a break from the old custom chips the last I read him on the groups when C= went belly up.

So IF, big IF, Amiga Inc could actually release a new RISC based board with modern hardware, with a small preboot kernel that then loaded up AmigaAnywhere and the AmigaGUI and added some emulation layer for older applications - No one is interested? Will we all only accept a classic Amiga clone running an updated classic AmigaOS? I for one would be happy to have a new platform out even if it's not 100% classic Amiga, if it has any of the original Amiga flair I'd love to see it on the market.

I agree..... but I whant to see it. The Workbench should be at least as good as OS4 in order to convince amiga users that the product is wothwhile. If this is not the case then what advantage over UAE is there?

We are in 100% agreement. If it's WB 3.1 then it's a step backwards but if you think about it - why would OS 4.0 be delaying their release of a new OS/hardware - unless they want to use the new workbench over their "retargetable" OS Kernel.

So I guess that leaves us with that infamous court case again.    ARGH!

Doesn't the court case amounts to is Amiga Inc(KMOS) saying, thanks we'll pay you for what you've done - now we'll take it from here. I mean after all, they probably want OS 4 for classic to be the last classic run directly on the old classic hardware, albeit with PPC, OS released.

From now on, they'll want new development to take place on their new "retragetable" platform.

I think that's down to the courts now. Hyperion would not agree with your view I am sure.

However it turns out I would just like to see some movement in our somewhat stagnated platform.

I'm sure that Hyperion wouldn't. They'd like to keep developing the classic OS for a classic type platform. I do think that it is fair for them to expect to receive fair payment for all that they've done. However, they don't own the rights to the IP and license from everything we hear can be pulled in the future.

They can not like it all they want but other than dragging this out in court what cards do they really hold?

That said, I too would love to see some movement in our platform. I'm even willing to make a clean break with the classic OS, if the new OS has some backwards compatibility and is a real alternative to Windoze and Mac BSD.
