Are you sure the serial port itself is working? It might be worth checking the -12V line from the power supply - if that's not working properly it will affect serial (and possibly sound too)...

A possibly silly question: You've tried both serial ports on the PC, yeah?

What about booting from DF1: - that should let you use DF0: for whatever you want, including writing transferred files, as the system will be using DF1:
