Yep, I'd guess faulty capacitors alright. At least you know it's not the power pack itself... There are a handful of electrolytic capacitors at the power input area of the A1200, my money's on one of them after failing. If you are getting it repaired, it would be worth your while to get them all replaced, not just the faulty one...
