They're fine for normal Amiga IDE, but round cables tend to be less resistant to noise problems than flat cables at high transfer rates.

The blocked pin does nothing except force the cable to be used the right way around. Either snapping the pin off or drilling the plug will sort you out, but MAKE SURE YOU SNAP THE CORRECT PIN!!
