Hmmm, I'll try to rename the update and see if it helps. If it doesn't then I'll pop in the 3.9 rescue disk and reinstall the complete machine to see what happens...
Thanks for the tips!
Update:
That actually did the trick! It was loading an older ROM update file (about 130K in size) insteaf of the 3.9 ROM (about 360K in size). After renaming it now loads the ROM correctly, Workbench info gives ROM 3.9!
The icons still are mostly 4-color ones, even though my Workbench screen is set to 8-bit.
Any tips on how I can make it look like:

PS. Without the girl please!
There are several ways to do this. You can install AFA_OS, which will let you use .png icons, which look much better tan the standard icon set with OS3.9. There are lots of different icon sets you can pick up off the web. My preference is for Ken Lister's "Ken's Icons", which are used by AmiKit. You can get them here:
http://www.five-star.com/icons.htmYou can install other Wokbench enhancements like VisualPrefs and Birdie, which will allow you tweak many more settings. You can also install Scalos and Director Opus Magellan II.
Or if you want a quick approach just install Amikit on your real Amiga. There is a guide on the Amikit website to do this and also read the forums on A.Org.
