Why don't you update scsi.device (or install NSD?) and FFS to use TD64? Of you do that you can then configue th drive as say 4gig for your system partition and 6gig for work.
On my A400D I've got a 80 gig drive and I'm using NSD and smartfilesystem without any issues (so far!).

You're quite right I'm also running IDEFix97, which I should have stated. It all works fine.
