Hi Cicero, thanks for this wonderful report. There has been some little change in version 1.0.2 which might interest you.

First of all, ATA device now acts like former 'emergency mode' kernel before, meaning that you should be able to install AROS and boot it flawlessly on a SFS partition, which is faster and safer. FFS has the habit of crashing and creating holes in the filesystem, which is really bad. And it's painfully slow.

'emergency mode' kernel has been kept as a desperate last hope, though.

Also: look in the "backup" drawer of AmiBridge, you should find right settings for AmigaOS 3.x screenmode and overscan.

I don't understand why it needs a DVD though; I thought AROS was small.

AROS is small. VmwAROS is not. And it will grew even faster in the future.  ;-)

Just saw that vmwaros 1.02 can be downloaded as a complete distro otherwise it could have been complicated if it was just an update and the non ata fixed 1.0 had to be installed first.

It's one of the main motivations why I went for a double release. The others were reliability (VmwAROS DVD boots with USB enabled, too) and download speed (otherwise a new user had to DL VmwAROS 1 before, 246 MB, and then other 89 MB of update, for a grand totale of 335 MB. Naaah).

It always gets stuck in the same place when the ATA units are listed [ATA  01] etc.

One thing I noticed can't appear to fully disable integrated graphics in bios.

Anyhow, looks like my board just isn't supported yet.

Sorry for that, Lorraine, we're working hard on ata.device, but it is still far from perfect. Anyway, you sould be absolutely able to use VESA modes with your integrated graphics. VESA modes aren't weird as someone could expect: I can watch DVDs on them without issues. Have your tried booting with emeregency mode kernel? Have your tried disabling SATA in BIOS, to see if at least the DVD boots correctly? As proof of concept, try disabling USB totally too, if you can. Maybe this won't let you enjoy AROS for now, but at least it will help us finding issues.

I even at one point almost disabled the PATA completely too, before I realised the folly of what I was about to do!

If it worked that way, I could merchandise VmwAROS as "the miracle-dispensing operating system"

The nvidia driver don't work for me... :(

As I try to boot the live dvd, the screen become corrupted on the first half and black on bottom half (I have a Geforce4 TI4200).

Do you know if there are works on this ?

Thanks.

Yes. Take a newer one from today's nightly build (you have to replace the nvidia.hidd file) or use VESA mode for now.
