Protracker is the "de facto" standard for music: free, four voices, effects, and some tools to create edit and manipulate samples - that and a copy of audiomaster or another audio editor should help at the begin.
There are several guides on how to use trackers, you might find videos for milkytracker or modplug tracker on PC: ignore the instrument definition part and just focus on learning tracker basics: command are mostly the same from amiga times (with the exception of xm format adding volume before of the instrument number, but that's it).
