Strange amiga 1200 hard drive has more than 44 pins...
« on: October 18, 2007, 03:35:04 AM »
I ordered a 44 pin to 40 pin IDE adapter for my A1200 HD.  I read I would need this adapter to hook it up to my PC to pull the files off via WinUAE. Unfortunately this hard drive seems to have 50 pins?  Well, there are 3 spots with no pins on the hard drive, so I guess 47 pins?

It looks like this sorta on the back of the hard drive:
[...................... ..]
[............ ......... ..]

It's a Seagate 8T9235AG if that means anything (so far google tells me it doesn't).  The cable that hooked the HD to the Amiga has a longer end to fit the HD and the normal 44 pin end on the Amiga end, with additional power that splits off from the cable.  I'm guessing for the set of 4 pins on the right of the drive.

This doesn't make any sense to me and I can't find anything about 47 (or 50) pin ide.  The size and spacing of the pins is exactly the same as the 44 pin adapter (as opposed to the larger 40 pin style), there's just more of them. I only noticed after trying to plug the drive in, resulting in some slightly bent pins where the connector overlaps the cable.

I'm afraid my adapter won't work, and can't find anything that would fit this bizarre drive.

Anyone got any ideas?

Wow!  Thanks for the fast reply!  I guess I was confused because the cable itself fit over the whole drive (jumper pins included).

If I'm reading this correctly, with the jumpers on the right, the power should come off the left side?  It says pin 1 is by the jumpers and the power is like pin 41/42.  I hope I'm reading this right.

Well, the PC won't boot with the drive attached... I guess it gets confused as to which drive is the master?  I don't have any jumpers to set the drive as the 2ndary drive.  I can hit f12 and get to a boot menu but when I select Hard Drive it fails to boot into XP.

Unless anyone knows of some workaround I guess I have to dig around the web and order jumpers.  I heard there was some way to get the files of linux or something, but maybe I'd still need the jumpers?

Thanks, I'll look into disabling the 2ndary drive in windows.  In case I need to set jumpers on the 2.5 drive, what size do I need?  It doesn't have any, and obviously the larger drive's jumpers don't work.

As for the details of the cables:  The cable that used to hook this to the Amiga covered all the pins, including the jumpers.  It was the "50 pin" cable that confused me in the first place.

The adapter I have now is a 44 pin to 40 pin adapter.  No holes are filled in (as they were on the Amiga cable) so I'm paranoid about hooking this (and the 40 pin cable) upside down.
