Both sets of speakers I tested were powered.  The problem was a quality issues with the power source (noise), not a quantity issue (watts).

SNAP! bringing this thread back to life to say thanks for the advice bubba!

my hiss problem was solved by using an A500 PSU as the modded PC PSU I was using for a while was giving my an annoying hiss when I had the speakers over mid level

ok so my sound problem has been solved with using my old A500's PSU but I'm noticing a 5 second delay from the time I turn power on the PSU to the time my A1200 actually starts booting? also every 2nd boot I have to ctrl-A-A to get it to boot up properly.

Checked the voltages & they seem fine at 5.2 and 11.9

@ Novacoder

True especially as I've had this A500 PSU since 86 so it's served me well in its service life :-)
Need the extra juice so I won't b getting an A1200 PSU as I've for a real 2.5" drive, 030@50, Subway USB and fan in my 1200.

@ spirantho & blizz120

replaced my caps this past winter so pretty sure it's PSU noise related as hissing problem is all gone with PSU change.  Just looking for a modern A1200 psu replacment
