256mb in a flash?
« on: July 06, 2007, 08:31:24 PM »
Hi, I've got a PCMCIA adapter with a 256mb flash card for transfering files between machines. When I bought it, it came already formatted and had a volume name. No prob with that - the card works fine. But if I look at it with Prepdisk, it gives the option of preparing it as Ram. Has anyone actually tried this?

I know the memory access will be a lot slower than "real" ram but having a spare 256mb of memory might be fun for a while..? Even a smaller flash card, say 32mb, configured as ram would add some useful power to a basic 1mb A600 with a hard drive, for instance. (Yes, I have one of those as it happens!)

I bought a cheap 16mb flash card off eBay but Prepcard refused to co-operate, stating that it was write protected! Dunno what that was all about.. .Directory Opus couldn't see it at all. As this seemed to render the card  useless, I didn't want to chance messing with the bigger card and losing that!

Anybody took the plunge and got results?

Ooh... there goes my Massive Memory Dream! Pity. I seem to remember those pcmcia cards now... they seemed to go no bigger than 4mb. I thought that, maybe with an adapter and the flashcard driver, things could get bigger. Obviously not that easy!

Thanks anyway!
