Get Scala.
There is a demo script called "Lo scalatore" which is a very short movie with sound made of a series of anims. So a working concept of what your are looking for is already there.
If you want to make it portable you can use Hollywood's Malibu plug-in with a Hollywood player that suits the platform of your choice, or use an amiga emulator an play it back.
BTW, AnimLab that comes with Scala lets you easily build animations from a set of images and has a very good anim format variant that compresses them in a substancial manner.
