I just ripped mine out, does the shielding serve any practical purpose?

I think it's purpose is to reduce the radio noise. Ever tried listening to an FM radio with your 1200 on in the other room with no RF shielding? That was my main reason for getting a digital radio. That and neighbours interference and damn pirate radio stations transmitting over Radio 4 frequency. How else are you meant to listen to the Archers in these circumstances?!
