Greetings, fellow Amigans!
« on: April 09, 2007, 06:25:47 AM »
Hi,

I just signed up to Amiga.org a few minutes ago, but I've been reading news and messages here for a while now.  I finally decided to participate a little.

I bought my first Amiga, an A1000, in April 1987.  The 20th anniversary will be in just a few days.  I graduated from there to an A1200 in April of 1993, to which I added a DKB Cobra 40 and DKB Ferret and Zip drive.  Then I moved to an A3000 in... I think 1997?  I added hardware to that one, too, including a GVP-m Spectrum and MultiFaceCard III.  I still have all of that stuff.

I moved from genuine Amiga hardware to a 2nd hand PC last year on which I only run Amithlon, which I had purchased as 'insurance' in 2001.  I'm considering making room on my hard drive to install AROS.

I'd like to be using AmigaOS4.  I'd like to try my hand at developing software for it, too.  Currently I work developing software for Windows.  I haven't tried Amiga development beyond some AREXX, some AMOS, and some non-GUI stuff in C and 68K asm.  I'm so used to modern C++ compilers with STL, boost, etc., that I'm not sure I'd have much patience for anything less now. :-/

BTW, I don't do Windows at home.  Partly that's to make sure I don't get stuck taking work home. :-)

Thanks, James!

Actually, I'm a tĂȘte-carrĂ©, sorry to let you down. :-)

Thanks for the greeting, AMIGAZ!

It looks like I need to figure out how to use these new-fangled web-board things.  They don't work much like Usenet. :-)

Thank you, everyone, for the welcome!

@Agafaster:
Thanks for the heads up re: utilitybase!  Maybe I'll try to learn something using AmigaOS 3.9 while I wait for 4.  I used to use GCC on Solaris in my university days, and on Amiga, for school projects.

@SamuraiCrow:
I didn't leave Amiga, I only stopped trying to write software for it. :-)  I used AMOS for a while, but that was kind of a transitional thing.  I still have AMOS, AMOS Compiler, and AMOS 3D above my computer in their Mandarin boxes.  I think that was the only company that sent me free software updates! (In the post, on floppy disks, all the way from Europe!)

Good luck with your AMOS project, it sounds interesting.  Does AMOS work on non-Amiga chipsets these days?  The old one I had didn't, which was one of several reasons I purposefully bought a gfx card for my A3K that had a passthrough for the native modes.

@Hans:
Actually, the thing that I most need is HARDWARE to run AmigaOS4 on!
