Problems trying to setup an A1200 with a VGA Box
« on: July 07, 2011, 08:37:04 AM »
:confused:Hi,

Some days ago I was given a Classic Xbox which I softmodded to install XBMC. To display it in my PC TFT Monitor, I use this adaptor I bought on eBay some days ago.

All XBox games are displayed very clearly no matter whether they are PAL or NTSC; I also enjoy HD resolutions (420p and 720p) in XBMC so, due to this succesful experience, I decided to get rid of my Avermedia JoyTV external scandoubler and thought I wouldn't have any problem setting up this gadget to work with my Amiga 1200 but I'm afraid I was wrong...

My damn TFT monitor should be able to display 1024x768 or 800x600 resolutions at 60 Hz efortlessly, but I haven't got a clue on how to get such resolutions. I've tried different drivers (HighGFX, HD720) but none seems to work ... I think I'm currently using some sort of productivity mode (600x400, and some PAL modes are the only ones that seem to work) with autoscroll which is absolutely insufficient to me.

Is there any way to get 1024x728 or 800x600 resolutions with a stock A1200 (no graphics card, no IndivisionAGA) ???

I'm totally desperate, so any advice is welcome.

Regards,

Manel (beltrixx)

I'm sorry but the only way you can get those screenmodes to work without a scandoubler from an A1200 is with a good multisync monitor, and both of them (800x600 and 1024x768) will flicker like mad without a flicker fixer. I'm afraid to get Workbench in those resolutions with a regular TFT monitor you will need the Indivision. Perhaps people will be selling them cheap once the Indivision Mk2 comes out with its Graffiti emulation and DVI output.

The adapter you use should be fine for running Workbench in 640x512 in PAL, maybe it will even fit a little bit more with overscan. I use a RGB-S-Video adapter plugged into my LCD TV and run Workbench and lots of programs in this resolution, it's not too bad if you put your programs on different screens.

Since you have that Xbox, have you set up UAE or AmigaSYS with it? You might be able to use HighGFX mode through that, and it'd make a pretty decent emulated Amiga system. Try it out if you haven't already - http://amigasys.ultimateamiga.co.uk/xbox.html

Thank you Cammy for your fast answer ;)

I'll spend some time trying to configure those PAL modes on my A1200 and look for an improvement.

Nevertheless, I will also give a try to that UAE for Xbox I hadn't heard of before...

I've installed the Amigasys onto my Xbox and it was fun to use. I will admit that as fun as it was, it ran abo. as fast as a stock A1200 so usage will be limited for PCU hungry software.

BTW, what kind of software are you trying to run on your A1200?

I've spent a long time without using my A1200 but I used to use it for anything special : play a few games through whdload, listen to mods with hippoplayer, manage files with diropus4 and so on, nothing especially CPU demanding...
