Seems to me that there were SCSI utilities that came with the GVP controllers.  Been a while since I lit mine off, it's not handy to look unfortunately.  Look for GVP tools.

DiskSalv was DH's great gift to the Amiga world, :idea: once he had tried to lead Commodore in a better direction through engineering (and they didn't accept his lead).  It has saved the day for many, including me.

"Not a DOS disk" was the most common error.  On booting up, it was not uncommon to see that happen if, say, the machine had been powered down during a write.  But leaving it with the power on for a couple of hours, often the basic SCSI validator would fix it.  If the machine is doing almost nothing but the HD light flickers on and on after powerup, this validation is probably what is happening.
