Looking at the picture of the IDE-Fix adapter (see below) ... Pin 1 (the one that red stripe on cable connects to) is on the bottom edge of the adaptor, denoted by the 1 printed on the board.



I presume, that in your second question, you refer to the 5 pin connector on the edges of both cards? According to the makers, if you plug the cable in the wrong way around then the software will nag you to swap it to the correct orientation ... nothing will break or go bang as the software will do a diagnostic upon startup and report any installation or adaptor faults.

No ... that part in your picture is a resistor ... I'm referring to the 44 pin and the 40 pin connectors.

All stripes should go at the end of the pins, furthest away from from the '40' thats printed in-between the 2 40-way connectors at the top ... See pic  :-)

Right at the very bottom in my picture, you can make out the '1' between the 2 sets of 40-way pins.
