CUSA Poll
« on: December 21, 2011, 02:50:50 AM »
I just registered at AW.NET and attempted to post this in the CUSA POLL thread over there, but it turns out I can't post for a day...

So, I'm posting this here. Anyone who can post over there is welcome to repost this over there.

============================================================
Might I suggest multiple polls, such as the following:

CPU
* M68K
* Natami M68K softcore
* PPC
* ARM
* x86/x64
* Other

Motherboard
* x86 based
* PPC sam/x1000 based
* Natami/Amiga based
* Other

OS
* AmigaOS 3.9
* AmigaOS 4.1
* MorphOS
* AROS
* Amithlon/Umilator with OS 3.9
* Amithlon/Umilator with OS 4.1 (assumed: 68k compiled version)
* Amiga-like with Linux kernel (to enable memory protection, smp, etc...)
* Any Amiga like option listed above.
* Linux
* Windows
* Other

* Price
* Affordable
* Moderate
* Expensive
* Don't care.

Hardware future
* Based in the past
* Expandible for the future
* Don't care

I would also recommend that it is emphasized which options are doable in the time-frame suggested by CUSA and which aren't. For example, standard x86 hardware with AROS is definitely doable. MorphOS/AmigaOS 4.1 is debatable, and, for example, an Amiga-like motherboard with any OS most likely not.

My two cents...

I assume you meant you tried registering and posting too?

I suppose it's an anti-flame measure...

Oh well, I'll try again tomorrow, if no one else does.

I'm not suggesting a single poll, I'm suggesting multiple polls to better get at what Amigans really want.

What they want for this so-called new Amiga is actually multi-layered. Some want AmigaOS PPC, others want AmigaOS x86 or ARM or etc... others want Natami/Amiga (I.e. custom chip, integrated CPU/Graphics) but a Natami style doesn't have to limit itself to m68k for a CPU. Nor does the x86 have to limit itself to BIOS/Intel. Speaking for myself, idealistically, I'd love to have the integration of an Amiga Mobo and the power of an x86 or ARM CPU. So, I'm suggesting multiple polls is to get and overall design.

Practically speaking, however, pretty much only x86 on a standard Intel mobo is doable in six months...

choice of os, which implies choice of hardware, except aros, alternatively a new 68k asic and/or amigalike case with original keyboard layout. what else remains?

Oh, and choice of OS does not imply choice of hardware. CUSA has not, as yet, ruled out, for example, the choice of OS4.1 on x86. They simply asked Amigans "what do you want?" And Amigans are definitely not divided along the OS4.1 only on PPC line, for example.

@ SamuraiCrow

Hmmm... me thinks your link needs to be posted in the news section of this forum, for any who might miss it...

While his polls more or less get at what I was getting at, there are a couple of things that concern me. Minor concerns: I think form-factor isn't important at this stage. As reflected by my suggestions, for example, I think the mobo architecture i.e. BIOS vs Amiga Early Startup Menu, kernel in ROM vs. read from HD is more relevant.

Major concerns: this poll can be voted on more than once. And he keeps adding additional polls which may have the affect of skewing the results, but I could be wrong on my interpretation there...

Like I said, I think this needs to be a news item. I'll try re-posting it.

I'm saying, Dave, that there are some who want AmigaOS 4.1 on x86. I'm one of them... :) But I also wouldn't complain about MorphOS and am just as fine with AROS... but it still needs more polishing.
