What do think of OS4.0 Classic Version?
« on: December 12, 2007, 02:46:38 PM »
Just wondering what you think of it so far and what programs you might be trying from OS4Depot

So far I like the way you can just plug a PC monitor onto your GFX card and insert the OS4 BootFloppy & CD to get the installation started. Then after selecting your GFX card the installation continues in 800x600 16bit screenmode 8-)

I also like the way I was able to download an OS4 version of my favourite DirectoryOpus4 (directoryopus.lha) from here

And I really like the way I was able to simply edit the icon ZIC to 'oktagon.device' and 'Unit 5' and have my SCSI Zip 100 working on my A4000 :-)

Isn't there a driver for the Cybervision 8mb Permedia card attached to the CyberStorm?

(Too lazy to look it up myself, I am on vacation this weekend and typing from the hotel room)

When going through the OS4 installation you have a choice of these:-

AGA
CybervisionPPC/BlizzardVisionPPC
CyberVision3D
CyberVision64
Domino
Graffity
Merlin
Picasso II
Picasso IV
Piccolo
Piccolo SD64
Pixel 64
Retina BLT
Spectrum
Voodoo PCI
Permedia 2 PCI

(lazy bones )

Wow, isn't actually that bad!

Looks fairly good... For AGA!

How fast are window-draws etc... is it laggy to move windows etc... or does it just default to the "windows are redrawn when youve stopped moving them" like on OS3.x?

Anyway, looks nice... for AGA! :-) :-D

Erm........ I haven't really bothererd looking at what the windows are doing yet as I'm more interested in getting my devices and programs working etc, but:-

OS4 Quickstart Guide wrote:

5. Holding down CRTL and ALT allows you to resize a window by dragging any border of the window.

6. Holding down CRTL and LAmiga allows you to move a window by dragging any part of it (not just the title bar)

7. Holding down LAmiga allows you to drag your screen from any point.

8. Holding down RAmiga will move your selected icons horizontally or vertically (depending on the initial mouse movement)

9. Pressing SHIFT key when you drag a screen allows you to drag it in all directions even if this feature has not been enabled in Preferences.

Don't know if that is anything fantastic or not

@A4000_MAD - If that's an AGA screenshot I'm a pregnant squid!

Well you had better start having those baby squid mate

That previous screengrab was PAL: 640 x 256 Interlaced (no GFX card was in the A4000)

Here were the installation settings.....

And we might as well finish off with an 800 x 600 24bit screengrab (CyberVision64/3D refitted) :-)

8-)

DV player won't work (unable to open a screen or something)

Yeah I've got problems with DV Player as well. I've got sound but no picture. However, if I click on the player and nudge it around a bit, the picture comes and goes while I'm moving it. But whenever the player is still there's no picture at all (it's just black) :-?

What's your setup?

I'm currently playing around with an A4000/PPC 604e 233Mhz with 060/50, CV64/3D, Oktagon SCSI card with Zip 100, Phase5 scandoubler in video slot and PC monitor.

To get the AGA screengrab reqested by DBAlex, I took out my CV64/3D and went through the whole installation again using a different HDD and didn't select a GFX card from the list. I just left it as AGA, Amiga 15 khz with BootVGA box ticked.

When I booted into OS4 and went into Prefs/Screenmode I could see that it was in pal:640 x 512 Interlaced :-)

@ AmigaMance

Thanks for the comment about my screengrabs :pint:

Note that I had used a program called CyberGrab to put a 400K ILBM image in RAM prior to copying it to my Zip 100 to take it elsewhere for conversion to PNG. I would say that the actual amount of chip RAM available before starting any programs would be nearly 800K.

EDIT - With the AmigaOS4 backdrop disabled in WBPattern, this goes up to over 1.2 MB :-)

I've just had a go at setting up a hard drive that can boot into either OS3.9 or OS4 :-)

My findings........

1. I could *not* boot into OS4 then do a soft reset while keeping both mouse buttons held down to get the the 'Amiga Early Startup Control' and then choose to boot into OS3.9 partition. The result was a red screen (ROM error alert)

2. I could *not* boot into OS3.9 then do a soft reset while keeping both mouse buttons held down to get the the 'Amiga Early Startup Control' and then choose to boot into OS4 partition. The result was a red screen (ROM error alert)

3. With OS4 set as the partition with highest boot priority and doing a cold boot, I could *not* successfully go into the 'Amiga Early Startup Control' and choose to go into OS3.9 (it would just go into OS4 anyway)

4. I *was* able to boot into OS3.9, use 'HDToolBox' to give the OS4 partition a higher boot priority and do a soft reset into OS4.

5. I was *not* able to boot into OS4, use 'Media Toolbox' to give the OS3.9 partition a higher boot priority and do a soft reset into OS3.9.  The result was a red screen (ROM error alert)

Conclusion:-

'Media Toolbox' and 'HDToolBox' seem to be an answer at this time :pint:

@ Rob & TetiSoft

Many thanks indeed :pint:

To be honest I won't be going that far down this road myself as I'm using one A4000 for OS3.9 and another A4000 for OS4.

(just had to do a bit of playing around with Dual-Booting though :-D)

Anyone had any joy with running old games and utils on OS4?

I've put PASSTHROUGH=YES in my CV64/3D driver and have my PC monitor on the Phase 5 scandoubler, but so far I have just got a Guru Meditation error from The Grim Reaper when trying to start old games etc. What should I do when I get such a report?

Anyone tried WHDLoad?

EDIT - :-o Space Invaders, Galaxians, BubbleStones, Battle Chess and BattleShips2 have all just worked
