I asked my dad for an A1000 after seeing Deluxe Music Construction Set and Arctic Fox running on one. I think I got it in '87. Eventually got a 2MB fast RAM upgrade that plugged into the CPU socket and filled the entire top of the machine. Man, that was a lot of memory chips. :-)
I went straight to the A1200HD. I got the first one in stock, and replaced the 40MB drive with an 85MB, 6MB fast RAM, and an FPU (for 3D rendering). I was really disappointed with it, though. The CPU was too damn slow, and the hard drives (both of them) were REALLY noisy and parked the heads continuously after each access. I was rather surprised that so many of my old games worked, though. I used it mostly for DPaint and MIDI through OctaMED. I bought my first PC (a 386) a year later, but only used it for DOS games. Win95 was my first Windows. I'm thankful I never had to endure Win 31. If I did, I probably would never had gotten that 386. ;-)
