Well ya they did not market there stuff very well (amiga cough cough), but they never lied to there customers either.
Here here. If you want lies, look at the Atari Jaguar. I still remember the tripe Atari put out about the Playstation being only "a little" more powerful than the Jaguar. Not to mention the whole 64-bit vs 32-bit thing. Of course, Jaguar games were crap, anyway. Even used and dirt cheap, Trever McFur and Checkered Flag were horrible. I bought the Jaguar JUST for Tempest 2000.
Dreamcast was/is an excellent system. The graphics are sharp, unlike the chunky look of early PS2 games. The audio engine is excellent. Load times are quick. The machine is built like a tank, and is dead silent. I own both a DC and a PS2, and I still think my Dreamcast wins, overall. PS2 games are just way to inconsistent in quality. Oh, and don't get me started about reliability. XBox and PS2 have both been notorious, to the point where I hardly see a working store display, anymore.
And, hey, $200! I dread the day when "popular" consoles start going to $350 or more.
