File sharing and EasyNet
« on: May 02, 2009, 05:41:19 AM »
Friends, I am attempting to establish a file-sharing network among my some of my computers, including a room full of Amigas. I am using EasyNet from AmigaKit on the Amigas, which are a 1200 with wireless PCMCI card, a 4000 with Deneb and USB network adapter, a 2000 with Deneb and USB network adapter, and a 3000 with an X-Surf card. All of the Amigas can connect to the Internet and browse with AWeb. All of the Amigas can ping each other and can ping my PC and my Macs.

All but one of the PCs can access files and write to my PC, which is named "Cerebro" on my network. For some reason, my 2000 does manage to mount a Workbench icon for "C on Cerebro" but tells me to "Insert C on Cerebro in any drive" when I attempt to double-click the icon. Not sure what the problem is there.

Now, here is where I am totally lost. How do I mount shares and move files between the Amigas (as well as see the Amiga drives from the PC)? Can I do this with software already installed with my EasyNet installations, or do I need to be installing and configuring such things as Samba or whatever?

Thanks for any assistance, friends. Networking woes make me very humble. In fact, they make me feel downright stupid -- not the power Amiga user I aspire to be!

I use Bulletproof FTP server on my winbox and AmiFTP on my A4000. Works great :-)

However, networking are not my best, how I managed to get make it work, I do not remember :-?

Hehe. I know what you mean! When I get something related to networking to work, and I am often at a loss to repeat the feat after only a short time has passed.

Now I have installed AmiFTP on two of my Amigas. They are at 192.168.10.151 and 192.168.10.152 on my network. As mentioned, they can ping each other successfully through the EasyNet host manager. When I punch those addresses into AmiFTP on one machine or the other, the connection is refused. Obviously I'm skipping some necessary steo (or many). What is it? This stuff makes me feel so dense!  :lol:

I usually use ParNet to move a lot of files between Amigas. But I want a more permanent networking solution so I can move stuff between computers without plugging and unplugging cables. I have one machine with a Personal Animation Recorder card that I enjoy, and it'd be great to feed it rendered animation frames from other Miggies.

Thomas, thanks -- makes good sense. :)

I've been working on getting Samba installed on the 4000. After following some installation directions in the Samba archive I downloaded that had me adding lines in various AmiTCP and Samaba text files, I am attempting to log onto to the 4000 from my 1200 using EasyNet's Hosts Manager.

Trying to use the account pcguest, I am asked for a password for the account. Where and how do I set up an account with or without a password? I have added this line to db/passwd....

pcguest||1701|100|PC Guest|SYS:|NewShell

Sigh. This thing is still kicking me in the butt.

Is Envoy for sale anywhere? That might suit me for my Amiga-to-Amiga networking needs, and I can already see my Windows shares on my Amigas with EasyNet.
