Buried deep inside a long a.org thread about scandoublers came the recent news that Individual Comptuers will soon market an internal scandoubler for the 1200. I assume AmigaKit will sell it, and I don't know if we know yet how much it will cost or when exactly it will be available. My impression was sooner rather than later, and I'll be buying this when I can. Somebody chime in with updated information if you have it.
I think you should order the machine configured as you described and make do with composite color for the time being. Then plan on getting the new scandoubler and use an ordinary (meaning cheap and easy to find) VGA monitor with that. Get the fast ram expansion for sure and an accelerator with fast ram if you can find one and can afford it.
When you get it all set up, you'll soon discover you can use a shareware program called WHDLoad to install lots of Amiga games to the hard drive with minimal fuss. A PCMCIA networking card (can be wireless) with EasyNet from AmigaKit will get the 1200 online with minimal fuss for downloading software. Browsing the Web on a 1200 with AGA video is not a barrel full of fun, however.
My NEC3D on my 1200 is dying, so I'm anxious for that scandoubler.
Oh, welcome back to the fold! A lot of us are having a midlife crisis like yours.
