Heretic II - big pixels! (see screenshot)
« on: July 12, 2010, 06:44:30 PM »
Hey all, me again. Since this is only slightly related to my other topic regarding Shogo, I made it into a new post. Can someone tell me if the (cropped) screenshot below is correct?

Im running Heretic II there, in 1024x768, with Warp3D (4.2) renderer, full details. I have the feeling Im not supposed to see pixels that big. Or perhaps Im spoiled by my consoles and pc? In QuakeWOS for example, everything is blurred and generally looks a lot better. Would be great if someone can confirm this.

Also when I look at this recording: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiWSpD7COCc it looks so much better.. especially the explosions. (Im getting much better framerate though) What am I doing wrong! :|

Again, I know this game is 20 years old by now. Thats not what I want to hear :)

Thanks Piru.. Was hoping there was a way to make it look better. Dya think this guy on youtube is running on voodoo or similar?

Your pixels are fine, it's your texels that look dubious ;)

Your image appears to indicate "nearest point" texture sampling. Fast, but not pretty. Surely you can enable GL_LINEAR ? AFAIK, it should be the default anyway.

when I do a gl_texturemode the reply is gl_linear_mipmap_linear.. Is that what you mean?

are you playing that game with that screen mode on a Blizzard card?

heh. you, of all people here, should know better :) this game is ofcourse not playable in that resolution. In 640x480 its good enough, in 800x600 just about bearable. Have to admit though, my ppc board is really performing well, Im getting better speeds than the results posted on amigaspeed.de.vu.

Yes. But evidentially, it's lying.

seems so! Glad I've got it sorted. Although when I put this in the user config file, the game wont load anymore. Im sure I can fix this though. Its awfully picky. It also never closes my Workbench, although I'm really telling it to do that. Part of the fun.. :)

Sigh.. Can someone tell me what files I can safely edit? Ive been trying to get

gl_texturermode "gl_linear"

and some other stuff to load by default, but everytime I try to edit one of the config files (user/config.cfg, base/Default.cfg, base/user.cfg, base/install.cfg), the game wont load anymore. when I do it from the console and save my game, the commands I entered are not saved. This is kinda driving me insane.. :|

Does adding +gl_texturemode gl_linear on the commandline work?

nope that didnt do much. I managed to replicate the problem though:

everytime the game saves a user.cfg file, or a savegame, the game wont load anymore. deleting those files makes it load again.. until I save a setting or enter the first level, then it quicksaves and I have to delete the files again..

this is so odd! surely others must have had the same problem? my config isnt that exotic.. (for amiga standards)

tried running snoopdos, but its not failing on anything. grey screen forever..

understood :) will try that tomorrow. but to be honest, I think my problem is not getting gl_linear to work right now.. but to get the game working after I saved a game or config from the menu. much appreciated though!

Try +set gl_texturemode gl_linear instead then. And I mean on the command line, when starting the application, not the ingame console.

Good! At least *that* worked. When loading game now with empty savegame folder and default config file, the game looks much better when switched to hardware renderer!

But there is more.. I have now succesfully saved and restored my games a few times, by specifying a different user path (outside of the game dir) in the launcher app. Doesnt work all the time, but at least the game now loads in 80% of cases.. Was probably just a case of bad coincidence before?

I can also save my config file, but it wasnt automatically loaded. Therefore I copied it over to my custom user dir and renamed it to user.cfg. This works! Config is now autoloaded and thanks to that added launcher option, the game looks nice, too. I'm pretty sure this is not the way I should have done it, but it works now, so many thanks for helping me out.

In case anyone didnt follow this:

1) add custom startup command in launcher: +set gl_texturemode gl_linear
2) add custom user dir in launcher to save your games to
3) copy config.cfg to user.cfg in custom save dir (see 2)
