4000d floppy drive problem

my chinon fb-357a does not seem to be working properly. when I got the system it was not hooked up, so I hooked it up. when I insert a disk it comes up with "?????" for the disk and I can not read anything on the disk(s). I have tried hooking up the cables in many ways, even tried moving the jumpers as read on another post. any ideas?

every type I have, some DD, some old 500 games (dd?), whatever dpaint 4 is. etc.
