But you are supposed to leave the DSL modem plugged and powered 24/7 ,otherwise it must renegotiate or something. The DSL modem here came with a sticker stating be sure to leave it on for at least 10 dyas continuously to reach maximum speed.I have notice a "learning curve "  in that  connection speed was first reported as just over 1Mb but after a few days was 1.5,and seems to be leveling off just under 1.8Mb (which is a far cry from the 48kb of dial-up)An short jumper to the wireless router and access is available house (and yard)-wide.Except now there are TWO wal-warts  and devices on 24/7.Then there is the wal-wart for the answering machine, the HDTV,and all the other things that can not be turned off without needing reprogramming. It makes conserving electricity difficult.

I bought a 3Com  8-port 10/100M dualspeed switch for $3 or 6 at the nearby Goodwill.
You can only find bargains if you look. The  wireless router came from Wal-Mart or Radio Shack  6 years ago for $40 ?,I don't remember.
But my DSl will work just by moving the ethernet cable from one computer to another.Perhaps cable modems work differently.Cable doesn't come up my road and even the newspaper carrier said it was too far from his other customers. We can't all live downtown,it would be crowded.

Come to think of it I have picked up wired router at Goodwill for less than $10 (of course the local store happens to be 45 minutes away.....
There are plenty of new or used wired or wireless goodies on ebay and elsewhere.
Sales clerks often don't know what makes a hub, switch, or router.
I remember the clerk  who insisted a friend buy the $50  pc-only modem because the Amiga 1200rs modem I had just bought for $10 at the same store wouldn't work on a PC.(The 1200RS has a siamese connector and came with both Amiga and PC drivers)
