PC0: 720k floppy woes
« on: July 25, 2007, 07:30:01 PM »
Hi all -

Recently got back into the Amiga. I have a 2000 and am running WB3.1.

I recently got a CDROM to add to the system but in the proces my HD died.

I was waiting on my RAM for my accelerator and now I have it.

Here is the issue:

before my HD died I copied the PC0: over to the proper location and was able to read 720k format floppies formatted on my PC no problem. Now I copied the same PC0: over to the floppy WB 3.1 (copy) and it seems to be mounted etc. But I cant seem to read any PC floppys now. I put them in and just get DF0: ????? .

Am I missing something that may have been installed on my HD to access the floppys from PC? It seems straightforward to me. HELP

I did have CD in L: but I need to check the MFM.DEVICE . I bet thats the problem. The HD came with the system so I bet those were in place before I copied the PC0: over... All the tutorials leave out everything you need to check and just say 'copy out PC0: and go to town' .. thanks guys.

What disk would i find MFM.device on?

OK I have everything where it should be. At least those three files. and it still wont read the disks. I know the disks are readable because I was just using them. I do not get a PC0: I just get nothing but the DF0: ???? Any other files I need to look for... man I wish my HD hadnt died. that made this stuff a real PITA.

Have you tried double-clicking on the PC0 icon?

No PC0: icon shows up with or without a disk inserted. hence the problem.

the mount file PC0: is reported as being mounted in dev/dosdrivers when I click on it.

Mount PC0: from CLI gives me an 'already mounted'

when I go into CLI and cd PC0: i get 'object not found'

also, when I put the RAD disk mount in the same directory it shows up as a drive on the WB screen. Just like PC0: ought to. Could PC0: be corrupted?

What do you mean by this? And how would I go about checking this?

Have you got CrossDOS in Tools/Commodities? (I think this is right, I haven't dragged my A1200 from the closet yet).

Does it go there or in L: ? I have it in L: . since I am booting from floppy it is a minimal 3.1. I will just make the directories and see what happens!

CrossDOSFileSystem goes in L, CrossDOS itself goes into a directory in the system's search path, and Tools/Commodities is ringing bells for me as I recall that it is controllable through Exchange...

Ah ha. I had CrossDOS the little program that will pop up with translation requestor box in L. So there is another file that has to be somewhere. I will look for i

THAT DID IT!

Thanks so much to everyone. It was the CDfilesystem not CD file that needed to be in L:

Once again you guys rock! Viva Amiga

PC0 works without CDFileSystem. I just took mine out and rebooted and PC0 reads PC formatted disks 720K. The mount file makes no reference to CDFileSystem, only CrossDOSFileSystem... So perhaps someone could explain what you are talking about.

I was getting tired of typing CrossDos so many times so i truncated it to CD. I thought it was understood since that is what this thread was discussing. Sorry for the confusion. and actually its things like that that confused me in the first place. Next time I will just cut and paste to make sure I make it clear.
