Wifi on A1200
« on: July 14, 2011, 05:33:25 AM »
I know I've been asking quite a few questions as of late, and I do appreciate all your help. I'm having trouble with getting Wifi working on my A1200. I have a Lucent Orinoco Gold in the PCMCIA slot. Prism2.device is installed, with SetPrism2Defaults in startup-sequence with my SSID and WEP key (128 bit). And I'm using AmiTCP with Genesis, making sure the IP I assign the 1200 is not taken by any other device in the house (I'm giving it 192.168.1.119), along with correct information for the gateway and DNS server (both handled by the router, 192.168.1.1) plus the subnet mask (255.255.255.0). But it seems I'm not connecting. Can't view a webpage, or anything else. As always, any assistance is most appreciated.

pccard.library is indeed in LIBS:, but I do not have CardPatch or CardReset in my startup-sequence or user-startup.

Alright, I'll give that a shot as soon as I feel like opening the case again to transfer files over.

So, I got the files on my 1200, and put the required lines at the start of my startup-sequence. Still, I get nothing. When I first turn it on, the lower of the two lights on the card goes on for a bit, then shuts off, then the one above it flicks on very briefly every now and then. I checked on my router, and it's not even connecting, as it's not showing up in the device list.

NovaCoder: While I am given to the understanding that EasyNet may in fact solve this problem, I am disinclined to purchase something when I'm not certain that the Wifi card or even the PCMCIA port is working.

Thank you all for the suggestions; I will be sure to try them out. I've already checked my SSID and WEP Key for accuaracy. Also, I do not have my router configured to filter connections based on MAC Address. And yes, I have it configured so my router's DHCP range starts at 192.168.1.120.

I could switch off the encryption temporarily for testing, but like I said before, SSID and WEP key are verified, so that's not it. I will check for the firmware, and perhaps see about upgrading AmiTCP.

There is a file named HermesII in Devs:Firmware, yes.

I will try following the AmiTCP guide next, along with new copies of prism2.device.

I can't win.

Installed AmiTCP and followed the guide in the thread. Also reinstalled prism2.device for good measure. What is happening now I don't think is related to that.

My 1200 won't boot.  All I get is a black screen, and the power led flashes a total of 7 times: 6 short, 1 long.

Well, that's moot. My accelerator died, so I don't have enough power or memory to even attempt going online. Guess I'll start searching for an affordable accelerator, though it might be a while before I can really afford it.

I didn't know that, as it always  used to boot with the card plugged in just fine. However, I did test it, and the machine only boots now when the accelerator is removed.

*sigh* And now it wants to work again. No complaints, but I wish I knew why it was acting so screwy.

I should clarify that I mean the 1200 and the accelerator are working, not the card. But I just had an epiphany and I'm an idiot. I know why the card doesn't work. It's 802.11b, and the router only supports 802.11g/n. thank you all for helping me, though. I do appreciate it.

Yeah, now that I know what the problem actually is, I know what I need to do to fix it. Since I'm certain that there is no 802.11g WiFi card with Amiga drivers (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), it will either be a router replacement, or just going wired on the Amiga. Whatever I do, it of course means more money spent.

Sorry for bumping a 10 day old thread, but I had to share, and what better place to share than in the thread I started about my WiFi connection problems.

I think the best way to say it is this. This post has been made from my A1200! :)

JJ: As I said before, the card is of course only 802.11b, and my router only supported g/n. Got a new router that supports everything and gigabit wired. Netgear N600 wireless dual band gigabit router (WNDR3700). Nice feature about it is it supports 4 different SSIDs. So I can have my always running 2.4 and 5 GHz SSIDs as secured as I can make them, and open an isolated guest SSID as the router refers to it for the Amiga. A useful feature, as also my Nintendo DS only supports WEP encryption, and I also rarely go only with it.

Gil: The router acts as a firewall, but I don't think that's what you mean. As for the filters, I think I can set a fixed IP per MAC without too much hassle. Your other suggestions are great, but I don't know how to implement them in the first place, and they'd be impossible for the various game consoles that have internet access. Possibly for the Amiga, too. It may be able to do the finger match, but I don't know about the rsync daemon.
