25-way D-connector to 50-way SCSI cables have 50 wires in them, 25 of which are grounds, and all those grounds run to the same pin on the 25-way connector. The ground wires are there to prevent cross-talk, in much the same way that 80-conductor IDE cables (for use with 40-pin headers/devices) allow higher data speeds than the 40-way cables. If you can find a 25-way to 25-way SCSI lead, it should still have 50 conductors in it.

It is not recommended to use 25-way straight-through extender cables in place of a proper SCSI lead.

From page 5 of the search that I posted, Item which is claimed to be SCSI-grade, using twisted-pair cable.

It seems better value to me than soldering my own such lead. Time is money and all that - not to mention the risk of getting something wrong or having to trace a poor or broken connection. :-)

25 wires onto one connection, at both ends... Also, the thickness (more to the point, thinness) of the wires is important. I think it is worth €15 or so (less if you can find one second-hand) to be able to blame someone else if it doesn't work.

Get yourself a cheap 25-way male D to 50-way male Centronics SCSI lead (pretty standard, lots available, second-hand plentiful, etc) and one of these  and you will have the best of all possible worlds :-)

The standard such cable is one of these which with the little adapter such as this would give a very useful combination.
