Vampire 500v2 microSD card question
« on: August 08, 2017, 04:48:14 PM »
Okay... having a little trouble getting 3.1 Workbench to throw up some icons to my newly partitioned microSD card in the Vampire 500v2. They simply never show. HDToolbox recognizes the Vampire card, SD card, sagasd.device, can partition the newly setup drive and all that good stuff...but still no joy.

And I may not even care at this point, because... the microSD card can ONLY be used as an Amiga HD? Is that correct? If so, what the heck? There already exists an IDE port, to which I've already installed and mounted a CF adapter to, that works like a charm and did so immediately under the standard scsi.device.

If you cannot use the microSD as a FAT DOS compatible removable mass media solution, why bother with it? I was hoping (and assumed) this was its function. I added a ribbon extension cable to the port and left it dangling outside the A2000 for this very reason. Sounds logical, right? What more convenient way to transfer stuff to and fro your modern computer, than this? Especially "little" things like oh... Vampire firmware updates that are too large for a single Amiga floppy? haha

Ended up using my ACA500 equipped Phoenix-boarded A1000 for that very task... then used HDBackup to make an image of the firmware update on two floppies so that I could get it into my A2000. sigh  Forever monkey-putzing around with this stuff and getting nowhere fast.  ;)

So... am I totally missing something here then? Looked at this page and that... Vampire info spread across various sites, but none seem to mention using the microSD slot as removable mass media. If not, why not?

I'll have to dig around some more for that thread then, but yeah... there is a sagasd update that I just installed that supports the slot, but I believe it may just be as an Amiga HD. If you're saying the driver is evolving, then maybe there will be an option someday to use it as removable mass media. Fingers crossed, but why not implement it as removable mass storage in the first place, before the redundancy of using it as an Amiga HD only? Puzzling stuff sometimes.

May as well reinstall my A2091 with a CD-ROM in the meantime, cause who knows if or when the microSD slot will be properly/fully utilized.

Thanks - yes, the giggledisk thing (creates a mountlist file) is automatically initiated when you execute sdmount. Have to manually input, not just verify as it never pops up for me, the correct file system. Now I can use a microSD card as an Amiga HD. Whee!  lol

...but are you saying that you're using the microSD slot as "on the fly" removable mass media?? That's what I'd really like to use it for. Even when I setup the card with the FATFileSystem and ensure Fat95 is in devs/dosdrivers - still nothing. Format the card as FAT using my Mac, but can never get the Amiga to see it as such. Icon always comes up with :NDOS. Try formatting as FAT on the Amiga side and get an error.

And never heard of an SDNET adapter. Can you point to where and what exactly it is?

I *THINK* It only reads native amigaOS partitioned SD cards, so, you can't use it to easily transfer files from a Mac or PC using a FAT file system.

SDNET is a network adapter  that a guy on the Commodore Amiga Facebook group makes and sells.  I'm sure there are others selling it.  There should be an SDNET.DEVICE installed from the SAGA drivers in your DEVS:NETWORKS folder or similar.   You can see how it works by googling -- there is a youtube video of it at work.  It is an SD slot to ETHERNET adapter.

Thank you for the info Kirk!
