Since you got such a good deal on the package and he apparently didn't have his cats purposely spray on your stuff, maybe the nice thing to do would be to send him some air freshener for the house and a coupon to a pampered kitty spa or something?
I don't know what exactly it is with some cat owners, if it's the cats themselves or how well or not they're maintained, but I dated a gal once that (believe it or not), had this cat odor about her. Totally pretty gal mind you - but that litterbox smell permeated her entire being. Only got through a date or two before I couldn't stand it. Her house smelled like it too, so did her mother and her auto. Yes, there were cats, but the place wasn't all gross, hairy or whatever. Odd, odd stuff. I have one cat and you wouldn't even be able to tell I have one unless you saw her. Bathed her twice in 4 years (whores bath, not even a true water/shampoo dunking), feed her Wysong food and use a 'green' (like wooden saw dust), no clay based cat litter. Oh and she's been fixed. Maybe that's the difference. If your cats aren't spayed or neutered, they'll want to spray their scent all over the place in an attempt to mark "their" territory. But back to the litterbox... can't stand the silica (or whatever) dust most of the cheap stuff is comprised of AND it's been known to give 'em cancer. A little FYI for anyone with cats that would like to investigate that...
