Q: about Midi software on A1000/A500 Amiga's
« on: July 31, 2009, 11:14:36 PM »
Finally got around to hooking my Casio CDP-100 up to one of my Amiga's via MIDI.
I've got Deluxe Music Construction Set (which crashes every time I try to "notate"
from the Casio btw) and Bars & Pipes 2.5. It does not appear I can simply load a .mid
file from the internet into either of these programs, which is what I was hoping to do
so I could learn to play certain songs easier.

Since neither of these programs want to deal with .mid (or .midi for that matter) files,
it would still be nice to hear these files played through my keyboard.

Is there an OS1.3 or OS3.1 friendly MIDI playback program? A quick search for MIDI
on Aminet revealed too many MIDI-esque programs. And the few I checked out all seemed to need
an 020 or better. The MIDI files I'd like to pipe through to my keyboard are only about
30-50kb in size, so it's not like I'm asking too much out of my computer, am I? lol

Thanks Matt_H, I download the datatype and the camd.library (realtime.library is part of OS3.1). Still can't get .mid files to play. But... even if I did, the other programs still wouldn't know what to do with them. I don't simply want to play a MIDI file on my Amiga using Paula... I want to have it play through the MIDI box and into my Casio digital piano. I'll see if I can "track" down (pun intended) that Deluxe Music 2.0 program later. Version 1.0 definitely doesn't know what to do with them.

Oh, I've got to take a closer look at this then. Off Aminet, the camd.lha file does not
have a camd.device or a program that lets me set prefs of any kind. Just camd.library.

There is a Midiports icon though... is that what you are referring to?

Oh and yes, MIDI box is hooked through the serial port...

Great, she seems to work now - thanks a million!! Had to enable the serial port
was my problem and didn't know Multiview was the gateway :-)

Do I need to change the serial prefs at all? Baud rate and all that good stuff?
There's one MIDI file that crashes my computer, but the others seem fine.

So there's no program available to play .mid files with all their instruments for
the Amiga?

There is a Bars and Pipes tool on Aminet for loading MIDI standard files (search for SMF). Also I recommend Black5 SMF player. No need for MIDI datatype or Multiview. It just interprets them in the raw and sends it to your internal serial port.

In my search for these files on Aminet, I discovered Midiplay. That's just what the doctor
ordered for playing back these files on a 68k based A500. I was happy with Multiview at
first, but found MOST of my midi files would not play back. In fact, they'd cause the
program to crash. I even upped the stack size, etc. Midiplay rocks.

Haven't been able to find the plug-in or tool off Aminet yet re: Bars and Pipes and Aminet
doesn't seem to know what Black5 is either. Outside of digitising sounds, real music done
on the Amiga is new to me.

Would like to play around with Deluxe Music 2.0 if anyone wants to sell a copy...

Yeah, I'm having a blast with this stuff. Thanks for the info. I've got a music room of sorts and
now the Amiga is officially part of it! lol  Midi sounds soooo professional through my keyboard,
but as nice as my Casio is (hammered & pressure sensitive keys, Grand, Baby Grand, strings,
harpsichord, electric piano, etc.), it's not a full fledged synthesiser. Very limited in what
instruments it plays.

Have it hooked through a Peavy amp with a nice set of speakers. Can easily play my
drums to the music and I love not having to contend with the sound of studio percussion,
vocals, etc.

Okay, so I downloaded and installed Deluxe Music 2.0, but cannot get the MIDI function to work. Set it to 'active', but no sound. Is there a midi.device I'm missing that needs to be put in the Devs:Midi drawer? I notice when you install DM, it asks what kind of Midi device you have out of ONLY 2 choices. I've selected both and they both drop icons in Devs:Midi, but neither work.

My Midi device is a ECE box hooked through the serial port...

See you got me haning on your music room wall :)

Indeed, I'm a HUGE Keith Moon fan and I like Animal just as well!

I won that little guy shooting cans at a 4H fair here in town a couple
years ago. Couldn't believe they had Animal! Decked out in the Pirates
theme for the Disney franchise, but still... :-)
