You may have a bad drive if the jumper settings are correct and the OS is not
recognising it. Perhaps a bad CIA? The tiny microswitch that determines when a
disk has been inserted may need to be cleaned or replaced too.

If you get pin one confused with the last pin, that can result in the Amiga not booting
at all.

Oh and all the floppy cables I have ever seen on an Amiga do NOT have a twist in them.

mine does...

twist + jumper 301 closed == 2nd DD drive
twist + jumper 301 open == 2nd HD drive

I had both... and working fine

Doh! Misspoke here I guess. So the twist is in regards to a HD drive?? Sorry, I don't have
enough experience with Amiga and HD drives. I was under the assumption we were talking
about DD. Thought the 354 was DD and the 357 was HD.

Looking into this, there's (seemingly) tiny differences between these things. If you have
a 6-pin jumper block on the back and for it to work on an Amiga, you must short pins 3 & 5...
