It's pretty easy to misalign the IDE headers on a 2.5" HD. Are you positive it's hooked correctly? Also, the Workbench disk you're using... does HDToolbox know to look for scsi.device? OR did someone overwrite that with a different spec?

Anything's possible with old computers. A component may have failed or someone fried the bus by hooking it incorrectly.

HDToolbox... highlight the icon. Select 'Info' and in the tooltypes section... see what is labeled as the .device. It should read: "scsi.device", even though it's an IDE drive & bus. lol

Only other thing I can think of is maybe it was formatted using a different file system than the native Amigas - FFS? Not sure what else is going on. In any case, a drive that small should be recognised by OS 3.1, an icon (at least) should pop up with DH0:?????  and you should be able to format it after you've saved the info (garbled or not) for the drive type.
