NiCad>Lithium Battery Hack for Amiga 3000!?" Part 2
« on: July 04, 2006, 08:50:27 PM »
Hiya
I posted before with the title:
"NiCad>Lithium Battery Hack for Amiga 3000!?"

I had this information (below) about the items I needed for the A3000 battery hack but was wondering if the rechargable lithium was a better solution. Presumably that would last longer then a single non rechargable lithium battery?

[color=ff0000]
After finding the battery hack info from http://ftp.sunet.se/~aminet/dirs/hard_hack.html
and looking at the parts list..

"Diode - 1N914 Radio Shack 10 pack US$1.19 part# 276-1122
Battery Clip - Radio Shack US$1.99 part# 270-430
Battery - 3.6V coin/watch battery, clip can take either CR2025 or CR2032 type."

I presume this document is a good few years old so I just wanted to know wether the parts I have here are fully correct.

These are where I sourced the parts today via Maplins!

Correct Lithium Battery Holder:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=32671&doy=1m6&criteria=lithium%20BATTERY%20CLIP

Correct Lithium Batteries (CR2025 or CR2032):

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=4470&DOY=1m6&criteria=CR2032

Correct Diode:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=DIODE%201N914&menu=0&WorldSearch=Y&doy=1m6&ShowPics=true&Stock=28&MinPrice=0&MaxPrice=9999&SD=false

I'm not overly skilled with a soldering iron so i will have to ask someone to do the job (especially due the Amiga 3000 being a tad old and irreplacable to an extent!!)

If anyone knows of a better way to do this modification then I'm all ears

Appreciate any feedback!

So what would the alternative parts be for the 'rechargable' option?? (and part numbers if possible!)
Obviously the same battery clip but different battery and no need for the diode????

I need to beg/borrow or steal a superkickstart 2.x disk as I cant do anything with this scsi drive. (this is after the battery hack is completed!!)

Well I think if I can't solder 3 connections on a Coin lithium battery holder onto a motherboard then that is pretty weak in the 'electronics hobby' department. :boohoo:

If your using the recharable battery option, what happens to the 3rd connector?
Can you get a 3 legged coin battery holder?
This is just crap being in the 'dark'  :-o
There is a good tutorial for replacing the RTC battery here...

http://amiga.serveftp.net/battery.html

But the chap says he hasn't done the same tutorial for the lithium alternative but he will eventually.

Anyone know of any step by step guide for this hack?  either lithium or recharable lithium?

I dont mind having a  go as long as I know roughly what I'm doing!!!   :getmad:

Thanks for the 'MakeSuperDisk' tip but that is only relevant if you have a fully function Amiga..I dont!!
I took out the boot scsi HD and chucked it and bought a 4.1 scsi HD for it. The original drive was 'chocobloc' with read errors.
So now when booting, it asks for the superkickstart 2.x disk. I dont have any kickstart disks atall.
I have ADF images but thats no good without a functioning Amiga!!
I chucked loads of amiga stuff years and years ago and that prob included my kickstart original floppies, sculpt 4d original floppies, 'Imagine' floppies, workbench floppies and the Commodore Amiga 'Binder' etc etc
Stupid i know but it's done now.

So i if was doing the original a3000 battery hack, where would the diode be and connected to what?
To one of the 2 terminals?

I understand a normal battery setup, 2 terminals...a positive and a negative and obviously both are required to power an electrical device via battery or be used to 'charge' a rechargable battery.

I just wasn't sure about this 3rd leg (connector) or the diode position

I removed the original battery and the legs!. I have 3 contact points on the A3000 motherboard.
If I do decide to do the job myself, could someone kindly adviseme  to the the corrct part numbers? (maplins)for the rechargable setup (so presumably no 3rd wire!!)

Including the recharble battery itself
Battery clip

Only 2 items needed for the recharable lithium setup??

Pete

Well I didnt get any response to the request for part numbers for the 'lithium rechargable option' hack for the A3000. I shall go ahead and purchase the non rechargable bits of which I already have the part numbers.
I'm still browsing the amiga pages of many amiga sites and cant find any 'step by step' guide for the lithium battery hack (non rechargable)

I still need a superkickstart disk 2.x and NO i haven't got the original roms. Jeeze I will even borrow it if thats what it takes.
My enthusiasm is dwindling week by week, when you cant get what you need

Well It's been over a year since I got my Amiga 3000 out, dusted it off, found NiCad leakage, removed battery and hopefully cleaned up the mess!. This was when I posted about advice of doing an A3000 lithium battery hack (beginning of this short thread).

I lost my enthusiam for a while and put the Amiga away.
I'm looking into getting it sorted now. The only difference is now I have been given an old dusty Amiga 500 (no PSU brick unfortunately!).

If I can get a PSU I can see if it works with the Commodore 1950 monitor that I have for the A3000. I'm so out of touch with Amiga hardware etc as I'm so used to PC hardware now.
Thanks 'TjLaZer' for your closeup of your A3000 battery hack. It's a good reference for us noobies!

Can I ask what type of diode is that?
