This Doomey bloke is a real moron.
He's more interested in slandering people other than helping them and the advice he gives is just garbage.
People who buy a 3000 may not even have another AMIGA to format anything, oh why am I bothering! that guy is beyond a joke, someone should stop him. People who are serious about amiga info need to know where to go for help and this nufty keeps them away from it.
I'd like to shove a computer ...........
I'm really sorry all. That just jerked my chain.
Formatting AMIGA HD's is really very simple, you don't even need a large HDD as most AMIGA programs are quite small thanks in large to the OS and structure. Yes, you can use big disks with an AMIGA, it can be a little fiddly, perhaps Wayne can pop up a Trouble Shooting AMIGA link on his page with fixes for various problems, I'm sure all of us would be willing to donate a small bit to help him with his time.
This is the simplest and probably cheapest way to set up your HDD.
Grab an old cheap 500MB hdd. You could probably get them for under $10 . Pop in your workbench disks and use HDtoolbox to set it up, format and whatever.
I say this because
A) It's a good idea to leave your OS drive alone and not decorate it with all sorts of guff.
B) It save all the heartache if something goes wrong, easier to recover etc etc...
C) you can then whap on a drive as big as you like on to the cable along with it.
No need to worry about DMA and access times etc etc as the Miggi can't do the DMA transfers and will use PIO regardless so the HDD speed shouldn't be affected by the older IDE.
As for SCSI, same goes.
I quite happily run my OS all the libs etc on a 340MB SCSI and I have a nice 30Gig drive for all my movies apps etc.
More than once I have had to recover my OS drive and every time I was thankful I had an easy way to do it as it was all OS complient.
Yes , if you really have to have just that one big drive you can fiddle with scsi.device and patches to get it working, you'll need OS 3.1 from memory to do it and even then, it's still a little fiddly.
There are plenty of posts here that can help you if you go looking.
Best of luck to ya. Someone kill doom. I used to love that game, now I wish I could frag him. Maybe there's a way to render a monster with his head on it.
