Test Beta of new game 194x - Help create new games
« on: April 19, 2006, 10:36:21 AM »
Hi,

My name is Gunnar von Boehn.
I'm currently developing an Arcade Game Construction Kit which will allow non-programmers to easely create high quality Arcade Shoot-Em-Up titles.

The Kit was started as development project for the Genesi EFIKA board. The KIT and the games created with it will run on MorphOS, Linux, OS4 and as well on Amiga OS 3 on 68k.

You can find more info about the Kit and downloads of the first game on my homepage:
http://www.greyhound-data.com/gunnar/games/index.htm

I would appreciate of you could test the game 194x and help me to find any issues.

As soon as the Kit is finished it will be released for free.
Titles created with the Kit will run without the Kit and can be sold or released for free - this is up to the author.
Before I release the Kit I would like to create some more good games with it to find missing features of the Kit.

I'm looking for GFX-artists helping me with new titles.
Please email me if you are interested to help.

One last 68k Note.
You need 16 MB Fastmem, GFXCard and a very fast CPU to use the game 194x.
Currently the game uses SDL sound which is very slow.
Owners of a fast UAE can use the game version with sound. Owners of classic better use the version without sound.
If there is enough demand for a faster 68k version then I'll add a classic soundplayer routine which will allow the game to run smooth on 68030/040 and up.

The Kit will allow you to create games in 320x200, 640x480 and higher resolutions. Games in 320 resolution will be playable on fast classic Amigas. For hires games you will need a Neo-Amiga like a Pegasos, Efika, Aone or Aros.

I'm looking forward to your feedback

Cheers
Gunnar

Hi Humppa,

Many thanks for reporting this issue.
I would have thought that the game will run fine with Mediator but I might be wrong. It runs with Voodoo and Cyber on MOS.

BTW
The game will open its own screen so the Workbench screen does not matter.
Can you please start the game from shell and send me the debug output?
How much fast mem do you have?

Many thanks

Gunnar

Is available for Aros?

It will surely run on Aros. When the game engine
is finished I'll release the source of it to compiling it for Aros should be no problem. If I have some more time I might build binaries for Aros myself.

Any chance for a WOS-version? Should improve speed on Classics remarkably!

Yes a WOS version would run very well.
My problem is that have no such system to test this now.

This is similar to the Picasso96/Voodoo issue.
The Amiga SDL was designed for CyberGFX.
I did test the game with Voodoo and Radeon using CyberGfx
and I did test it with Picasso on WinUAE (here the game did work nice too)

Unfortunately remote HW-testing is a bit complicated. :-/
If someone wouldn't mind testing a few progams for me then please mail me.

I'm living in South-Germany (Nagold) near Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. If someone with Mediator and Voodoo lives near to me and wouldn't mind me visiting him with a case of beer for a testing session then please tell me. :)

Cheers
Gunnar

How long did it take you to write the 194x game? Were you able to rip anything directly from original versions, or did you produce this one from scratch?

I started thinking about the game and Construction Kit when my wife and me were in hospital awaiting our first baby last xmas. The game engine is written from scratch and is about 7000 lines of code so far. It took me about two month to write. The GFX was recreated based on screenshots of the Arcade original.
The game engine and Kit only covers things neede for this test game - I'll need to add write more routines for cases like underwater effects, rendering of fog and smoke, etc.
I hope that some people will help me with painting so that I can focus on coding.

can games be made to work on an A1200 with 2mb Chip? or even a plain A600 with 2mb Chip?

The game is using hicolor (16bit GFX).
So it requires a GFX card.
I recently added 256 color support to the game engine.
With loosing a little quality and dropping some effect like the colored light then the game could run in AGA.

If I add a Chunky2Planar and Paula Sound to the game engine then this game and other games created with the Kit would run well on very fast AGA Amigas (A1200 + 060).

An A600 is way to slow for that type of game and does not support enough colors to show these type of games.

But to be honest I'm not sure if adding AGA support to the game-engine is worth the work. Now that Neo-Amigas like the Efika are supposed to coming out with a price tag of only $100.
I assume most of the still active Amiga users will get such  a new, fast Neo-Amiga soon.

@Methuselas

Did you get my PM?

Do you have any plans for a Linux x86 version?

I can compile one for you. I'll do this today or tomorrow.

Actually I had hoped to find some Amiga people helping me with GFX for future games before I start building Linux and Windows binaries. :-)

For these not having a fast Amiga.
I have uploaded Linux (x86) and Windows binaries for you now.
