Does indeed sound like a timing problem, 1d.4 and 2B revisions our well known for this.
Dunno which is cheaper but i got one of my boards fixed by Eyetech, very prompt & reliable service there as always.
I'd also get whoever your getting it fixed with to  maybe test your setup so that it does indeed fix your problem.
