It's faster - especially in floating point. In fact, it's so much faster in that department that Amblin Entertainment used EMPLANT boards w/FUSION as their Avid Video systems. 
@JimDrew EMPLANT+Fusion, is exactly the configuration that works best for me.
Additionally certain versions of EMPLANT have localtalk ports on them, Making it easy to setup Appletalk networks.
