The board has a RS-232 port which should be possible to adapt to MIDI bit rates? otherwise there's 3x spare generic I/O from the FPGA that can be (ab)used..

How is your physical interface connection right now?

(perhaps FPGA Replay may solve your memory requirement.. some 64 MB)
